Fight Club # 6

Conflict is a struggle between opposing forces. Select two of the types of conflict (character vs. character, character vs. self, character vs. fate, character vs. society, character vs. nature). Explain how these conflicts are exhibited in the book you are reading.
- Character vs. character- Tyler and Marla are always fighting with eachother and getting into stupid little arguments that have no significance.
-Character vs. self- The narrator and Tyler are the same person. and he is a schitzophrenic, so he is always getting into fights and arguments with himself.

- Character vs. Character- Tyler and Marla are always in conflict with eachother. They are always arguing about little insignificant things and they get blown out of porportion.
- Character vs. Self- The narrator and Tyler are the same person, and he is kind of a schitzophrenic so he is always fighting, yelling, arguing, and other things that a schitzophrenic does.

Indirect characterization means that the author gives us clues about a character's personality through how the character acts, what others say about him/her, what the character says. Give an example from this book of indirect characterization.
- "Bob's shoulders inhale themselves up in a long draw, then drop, drop, drop in jerking sobs. Drop, drop, drop."

Fight Club #4

Direct characterization means that the author tells us directly what the character is like. Quote an example in this book of direct characterization.
- "The only woman here at Remaining Men Together, the testicular cancer support group, this woman smokes her cigarette under the burden of a stranger, and her eyes come together with mine. Faker. Faker. Faker. Short matte black hair, big eyes the way they are in japanese animation, skim milk thin, buttermilk sallow in her dress with a wallpaper pattern of dark roses, this woman was also in my tuberculosis support group friday night. She was in my melanoma round table on Wednsday night. Monday night she was in my Firm Belivers leukemia rap group. The part down the center of her hair is a crooked lightning bolt of white scalp."

Fight Club # 3

Who or what is the antagonist of your book? How does the
antagonist work against the book's protagonist?
- The antagonist in "Fight Club" is Marla Singer. Marla is always around and now thinks that she can go over to his house anythime she wants. because she is always around, Tyler is sort of "cramped" in a way. In order for him to go around the house working on one fo the many projects he has, he has to have his "friend" get rid of her. He usually has her run some errand or sometimes just tells her to leave and get out and never come back. But she always does come back. She doesn't think that her presence in the house is preventing Tyler from doing his stuff, but it does.

Fight Club # 2

A protagonist is the main character. Who is the protagonist of your book? Describe him/her.
-In my book, Tyler Durden is the protagonist. H has many different jobs such as a banquet server, he is the person who changes the slide reels in the movie theaters, and he also makes and sells soap to department stores for about twenty dollas a bar. he is also the "founder" of fight club, which is a place where guys go to fight other guys. Every guy who comes to the "meetings" wants to be like Tyler. He is fearless, isn't tied down by anything or anyone, does whatever he wants whenever he wants, and he can get almost any woman he wants.

Final Blog

Shawn McDaniel is the main character of the book. Over the course of the story Shawn has become more aware of whats going on in the world around him, though he cannot interact with it. He has become more aware and it almost certain that his dad is going to kill hime sometime. Shawn's personality is just like that of a normal boy his age even though he has cerebal palsy. He is feeling the same towards girls and his parents and to what people may say around him.

This novel is about a boy (Shawn) who has cerebal palsy. Shawn tells his life story and what goes on in his day to day life. He also reveals to us that he thinks that his dad is going to kill him.

The novel really only takes place in one setting. Shawn's house. It takes place in what is probablly the modern day time in the suburbs. This is the place where Shawn feels the most comfortable in out of the places that he tells us that he has gone, like school, and the houses of some of his relatives. He is the most familiar in house because that is basically the place where he spends his time.

The climax of the novel occurs when Shwan's mom, brother, and sister are out of town and he is left alone with his dad. His dad takes him and puts him in his bed and just sits there staring at Shawn. He talks to Shawn and tells him how much he loves him and how much it hurts him to think about and see how much pain Shwan is in. After he tells Shwan how much he loves him, again, Shawn goes into a seizure and wonders what his dad will do. But he says whatever happens, in another moment he "will be flying free. Either way, whatever he does, I'll be soaring."

The author wrote this story based on what his son might be going through. His son has cerebal palsy just like Shawn. He wanted to invent a character based on what life might be like for his son. "Is he a genius, does he like potato chips and rock and roll? Inside himself is he whitty and funny and wise? Is he happy to be alive?" Those are the questions he asked himself while writing the novel. "I can't say "yes" to any of these questions. But I can't say "no" either. All anybody can honselty say is " I don't know"- none of us really does"-Terry Truman.

Why did dad interview that loser Earl Detraux?I mean the guy killed his own son. I think he only did it because he wants to kill Shawn. That is why he moved out, because he couldn't stand being around him anymore. I still hate him for that. A real father wouldn't move out of his house just because he didn't want to be around his retarded son. He's such a pansy. Well I can tell you one thing for sure, if he ever does try to kill Shawn, and if he is successful, I will probablly end up killing him back.--Told from the view of Paul, Shawn's brother.

The main setting of this book is at Shawn's house. Significant places in this novel other than his house are Shawn's school, and The Alice Ponds Show. Shawn's school is significant because his dad goes to "visit" Shawn at his school, but he's really only there to do a news broadcast or something about how the money that tax payers give to "teach" kids who are mentally dissabled actually goes to the school. He shows them how the money is used to help the kids learn how to do basic things like writing and tying their shoes. The other place of significance to this book is the Alice Ponds Show. On that show they show the interview that his dad had with Earl Detraux, who killed his son who was just like Shawn. According to Shawn, he was only interviweing him to figure out how he want to go about killing his own son, and to "learn from the mistakes" that Earl might have made.

"First off, my parents got divirced ten years ago because of me. My being born changed everything for all of us, in every way. My dad didn't divorce my mom, or my sister, Cindy, or my brother, Paul-he divorced me."
I think this quote from my book is important to the story because it begins to "lay the foundation" of the whole "theme." Shawn's father couldn't handle his condition, so instead of trying to work thing out he just decided to quit. He even moved out because he couldn't handle Shawn and his condition. He still sees Shawn from time-to-time, but onlywhen goes home to see his wife, and his other two kids.

"There is one final bad-news punch line to my life. The bad news is complicated, difficult to explain. In a nutshell, it's that I'm pretty sure that my dad is planning to kill me."
The passage is important because Shawn has sort of figured out how much of a hard time his dad is having with his condition. But just because it "hurts" him to see his son go into a seizure, he doesn't need to kill him. If he really loves his son, like he says he does, he doesn't need to kill him. Shawn has now become terrified whenever his dad is around, because he doesn't want to die. He loves life even though his life is limited in a way.
